A.P.C. (Atelier de Production et de Création — “Workshop of Production and Creation”) is a French clothing brand founded in 1987 by Jean Touitou in Paris. The brand began as a menswear collection — its first pieces simply labelled “HIVER 87,” with A.P.C. labels not appearing until 1989 — as an explicit reaction against the extravagant, heavily branded fashions of the 1980s. Touitou, a French-Tunisian designer who had studied History at the Sorbonne and worked at Kenzo without formal fashion training, launched A.P.C. from the conviction that well-made, understated, quality clothing was itself a radical proposition. History

Touitou’s family emigrated from Tunisia to Paris when he was nine years old. His father was a tanner with an affinity for Scandinavian leather, and Touitou grew up surrounded by Swedish design — a formative exposure to Nordic minimalism that shows clearly in A.P.C.’s aesthetic. After graduating from the Sorbonne with a degree in History and Geography, he took an office job at Kenzo without fashion credentials, worked in the warehouses, and absorbed the fundamentals of the industry. He left Kenzo, briefly founded a music label (Roadrunner Records), lost money, returned to Kenzo as an accountant, then founded A.P.C. in 1987.

The catalyst, as Touitou has recounted, was a trip to Barcelona during which he lost his luggage. Unable to find raw denim jeans anywhere — only badly washed, over-treated products — he decided to make his own. A designer friend subsequently gave him a roll of high-quality Japanese selvedge denim, and Touitou tracked down the weaver to establish an exclusive “special recipe.” A.P.C. raw denim — fast-fading, precise, and unwashed — became the brand’s signature and remains its most celebrated product. The first store opened in 1988; Tokyo’s Daikanyama store opened in 1991; New York’s Mercer Street store in 1993. In 2023, L Catterton (backed by LVMH and the Arnault family’s private equity) acquired a majority stake in the brand.

Aesthetic and Philosophy

Touitou chose not to name the brand after himself because he prefers the idea of community over individual hero. “The magic of business is when you don’t show you’re selling something. You just do your thing, you believe in it, you put it there and you wait and see.” A.P.C.’s design vocabulary is rooted in workwear, military clothing, and classic menswear — interpreted through French minimalism and deployed with extraordinary consistency season after season. The brand’s collaborations (“Interactions”) with Kanye West, Carhartt, Brain Dead, and others have been culturally significant.
