Arpenteur is a French menswear brand founded in 2011 in Lyon by cousins Marc Asseily and Laurent Bourven — two self-taught designers with no prior fashion experience, united by a mutual love of vintage French marine, naval, and workwear. “Arpenteur” translates as “surveyor” or “land measurer” in French, reflecting the brand’s grounded, practical philosophy. Everything Arpenteur makes is produced entirely in France, using traditional factories across the country; the brand is a committed participant in the revival of French artisanal manufacturing and treats French-made production not as a marketing point but as a genuine design and quality constraint.

History
Asseily and Bourven founded Arpenteur after abandoning earlier ambitions in film and music — fashion felt more accessible, though as Asseily has noted, “we didn’t know it was going to be this hard.” Their shared passion for vintage French workwear — fisherman’s smocks, Breton striped shirts, marine parkas, naval uniform jerseys — formed the entire starting point. From day one, they committed to 100% French production, working with specialist factories across Lyon, the Loire, and Brittany. Over 15 years, the collections have evolved from pure functional workwear to more sophisticated interpretations of the same vocabulary, with carefully developed woad-dyed linens, old-loom-knitted jersey T-shirts, and lambskin leather outerwear sitting alongside the classic fisherman smocks and bright yellow parkas.
Aesthetic and Products
Arpenteur’s design language is anchored in coastal and maritime France — a restrained palette of blue, white, yellow, and grey, applied to loose utilitarian silhouettes with careful proportions and understated finishing. Mother-of-pearl buttons, naturally dyed fabrics (including woad, a traditional European natural blue dye), Breton stripes, and the classic French “tablier” (work coat) appear across collections. A longstanding collaboration with Paraboot — whose factory is approximately an hour from Arpenteur’s Lyon base — has produced a series of co-designed footwear. Available at Neighbour (Vancouver), Mohawk General Store, La Garçonne, and specialist menswear retailers internationally.
