Filson

Filson is an American outdoor outfitter and clothing brand founded in 1897 by Clinton C. Filson in Seattle, Washington — originally called C.C. Filson’s Pioneer Alaska Clothing and Blanket Manufacturers. Its founding coincided with the Klondike Gold Rush: standing just steps from where the steamship Portland had docked with Klondike gold in its hold, Filson outfitted the prospectors flooding through Seattle with Mackinaw wool clothing, blankets, boots, and sleeping bags that were purpose-built for survival in the Yukon’s extremes. Over 125 years later, Filson remains defined by that founding standard: “Unfailing Goods” — equipment built to last long enough to be passed to the next generation.

History

Clinton Filson was a railroad conductor from Nebraska who moved to Seattle in the 1890s. His first outfitting stores served prospectors during the Monte Cristo gold rush before he pivoted to serve the stampede heading north for the Klondike. Filson died in 1919; his wife Winifred Filson ran the company for another four decades. The Filson Cruiser jacket — a utility garment with specific tool-carrying pockets that revolutionised forestry and surveying work — was patented on March 3, 1914 (US Patent #1088891) and remains in production today. By the 1960s, Filson was shipping to customers as far as Greenland.

The brand changed hands several times through the 20th century. In 1991 it revived its line of bridle leather-trimmed canvas luggage. In 2012, Brentwood Associates sold Filson Holdings to Bedrock Manufacturing Co. — a Dallas-based firm founded by Tom Kartsotis (the founder of Fossil Group) — which invested in expanding US manufacturing and opening a major new facility in Seattle’s SODO district in 2013. More recently, production has shifted: US-made product fell from 90% in 2015 to approximately 35% by 2025, as Seattle-area manufacturing has been significantly reduced.

Products and Aesthetic

Filson’s signature products include the Mackinaw Cruiser (the original, in heavyweight boiled wool), the Tin Cloth Packer Coat (waxed cotton), the Otter Green briefcase and tote bags (bridle leather-trimmed waxed canvas), and the Mackinaw Field Pants. The aesthetic is unapologetically functional: heavy materials, minimal styling, maximum durability. The brand is trusted by the US Forest Service, loggers, hunters, anglers, and an international following of men who wear it with equal conviction in the woods and on the streets of Tokyo. Motto: “Might as well have the best.”
