Goldwin

Goldwin is a Japanese sports and technical apparel company founded in 1950 as the Tsuzawa Knit Fabric Factory in Oyabe City, Toyama Prefecture. One of Japan’s most important sportswear manufacturers, Goldwin is the company behind The North Face Japan, Helly Hansen Japan, and — through its long-term relationship with designer Eiichiro Homma — the nanamica brand and The North Face Purple Label. History

Founder Tosaku Nishida established the company to manufacture knitwear and, foreseeing a boom in Japanese sports culture, pivoted to sportswear in 1958 under the Goldwin name — chosen in the hope that Japanese athletes would win gold (which, at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, they did, wearing Goldwin uniforms across gymnastics, volleyball, and wrestling). Through the 1960s, Goldwin developed innovative ski sweaters combining high functionality with sophisticated design that became iconic on Japanese slopes. The company became official uniform supplier to the Swedish National Ski Team in 1987.

In 1978, Goldwin began distributing The North Face in Japan, eventually acquiring full rights to the brand within the country — allowing it to design and manufacture Japan-exclusive North Face products, including the fashion-forward The North Face Purple Label. The company similarly manages Helly Hansen Japan, Champion Japan, and Icebreaker Japan. In 2016, it relaunched the Goldwin lifestyle line as a standalone fashion brand, combining its decades of technical expertise with clean Japanese minimalism. In 2017, the Goldwin Tech Lab was established in Toyama for advanced R&D.
