History
Shinichi Haraki spent twenty years in the Japanese garment industry before founding Iron Heart, beginning as a pattern maker at Edwin — one of Japan’s most respected denim manufacturers — and rising to designer and producer/director. He left Edwin to run a consulting company advising on denim manufacturing, and at age 46 decided to apply all of that expertise to his own brand, one shaped by his own passion: motorcycling. Iron Heart was built for bikers — heavy enough to offer abrasion resistance, durable enough to last years of hard use, constructed to the standard that Haraki believed no existing brand was meeting.
In 2005, Giles Padmore — a British IT professional and denim collector from Gosport, Hampshire — cold-emailed Haraki proposing to manage international sales and distribution. Haraki replied (the only Japanese denim brand to respond to Padmore’s emails) and an unlikely but extremely productive partnership was formed. International distribution grew the brand’s reach dramatically, and Padmore’s son Alex took over management in 2021. Iron Heart now has over 65 stockists worldwide and stores in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Kojima.
Product and Craft
Iron Heart’s flagship product is its 21oz selvedge denim — the heaviest commercially produced denim in the world, woven in Japan on vintage shuttle looms from long-staple cotton, and designed to develop dramatic high-contrast fades over years of wear. The brand also produces its Ultra Heavy Flannel (UHF) shirts, heavyweight chambray work shirts, leather jackets, and accessories. The company motto — “over-engineered is our starting point” — captures the philosophy: minimum quantity, maximum quality, zero compromise.
