Nigel Cabourn is a British fashion designer and the brand he has built under his own name over more than five decades — one of the most respected and singular voices in men’s heritage clothing anywhere in the world. Born in 1949 in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, Cabourn studied fashion at Newcastle Polytechnic (now Northumbria University) from 1967 to 1971 and launched his first brand, Cricket Clothing, while still a student. He has never left the North East of England.

History
Cabourn launched Cricket Clothing in 1971 and quickly gained international attention, exporting to Japan by 1973. In 1979, a Japanese businessman approached him at a Paris trade show and built a 10-million pound Cabourn business across Japan and the Far East — a relationship that continues to drive a large part of the brand’s sales. The brand was renamed Nigel Cabourn in 1984 after trademark issues in Japan.
The pivotal moment in Cabourn’s design career came when his close friend Sir Paul Smith gifted him a vintage RAF pilot jacket in the late 1970s. The gift unlocked a lifelong obsession with vintage military, expedition, and workwear clothing — Cabourn has since assembled an archive of over 4,000 vintage garments and a library of nearly 3,000 books on exploration, military history, and sporting heritage. Every Cabourn collection begins here, in the archive, where a specific person, expedition, or moment in history provides the season’s focus. Past references have included Arctic explorers, Himalayan mountaineers, Vietnam-era soldiers, and Yosemite rockclimbers of the 1970s.
Collections and Collaborations
The brand operates four main lines: the Mainline (the primary collection), Authentic (heritage fabrics, made in England), Army Gym (sportswear and jersey), and Lybro — a revival of the original Liverpool workwear brand Cabourn acquired and relaunched. Collaborations over the years include projects with Red Wing, Viberg, Filson, Eddie Bauer, Fred Perry, Karrimor, and Peak Performance. The brand is particularly strongly represented in Japan and the UK, and is stocked by END. Clothing, Marrkt, and select international retailers.
Aesthetic
Cabourn’s work is grounded in historical research and material authenticity — Harris Tweed, Ventile cotton, British wool, military-spec fabrics — reinterpreted with his own sense of proportion and colour. His silhouettes are generous, his palettes earthy and military-adjacent, and his level of detail obsessive. He has been called a “national treasure” of British menswear by MR PORTER.
