Raleigh Denim Workshop

Raleigh Denim Workshop is an American selvedge denim and workwear brand founded in 2007 by Victor Lytvinenko and Sarah Yarborough in Raleigh, North Carolina — the heart of what was once one of the United States’ most productive textile-manufacturing regions before the industry largely migrated overseas in the 1990s and 2000s. Working from a small studio space in a Raleigh warehouse, Lytvinenko and Yarborough hand-cut and sew every pair of jeans themselves from selvedge denim, producing extremely limited quantities of clothing that pays homage to the state’s vanishing textile heritage while making some of the finest crafted American denim available.

History and Philosophy

Lytvinenko grew up in Ukraine before emigrating to the United States and settling in North Carolina, where the collapse of the domestic textile industry left a visible trace on the landscape — shuttered mills, specialised machinery gathering dust, craftspeople whose skills had nowhere to go. He and Yarborough began making jeans in their apartment and selling at local markets before establishing a dedicated workshop space that also functions as a retail store. The brand’s entire production is hand-cut and hand-sewn by Lytvinenko and a small team, working on Merrow chainstitch machines, Union Special machines, and other vintage industrial equipment. Annual output remains deliberately small — the brand focuses on quality and process over volume.

Raleigh Denim gained national recognition when it was featured in the New York Times, GQ, and Esquire, and when President Obama’s administration cited the brand as an example of American manufacturing revival in 2012. The brand has been featured in retail at Urban Outfitters and J.Crew, and in editorial throughout the decade. Victor and Sarah married; Raleigh Denim is a genuine family business in both senses.

Products and Aesthetic

Raleigh Denim produces five-pocket jeans (the Jones, the Martin, the Warren — fits named after North Carolina counties), work shirts, chore coats, overshirts, and accessories in selvedge denim and sturdy workwear fabrics. Each pair of jeans takes approximately 45 minutes to make. The aesthetic is directly inspired by the functional workwear of the American South — honest, durable, without decoration or branding excess. Available through the brand’s Raleigh workshop-store and a small number of online retail partners.
