Universal Works

Universal Works is a British menswear brand founded in 2008/2009 by David Keyte and Stephanie Porritt in Nottingham. Built on a straightforward ambition — to make honest, well-designed clothing rooted in British working-class workwear, military heritage, and everyday practicality — Universal Works has grown from a kitchen-table operation into one of the UK’s most respected independent menswear labels, without ever losing the direct, human quality that defines it.

History and Philosophy

Keyte grew up on a council estate in the Midlands in the 1970s, in a working-class family that nonetheless cared deeply about how they dressed. He worked as a sign-writer’s apprentice before spending thirty years in the fashion industry — including stints at Paul Smith and Maharishi — before co-founding Universal Works from his kitchen table in Nottingham. The brand’s first collection launched in 2009 and was initially sold to just ten retailers. Today it is stocked in over 300 stores globally.

Universal Works has stayed resolutely independent. Keyte has rejected opportunities to scale rapidly, preferring small-batch production with trusted factories — some in the UK, others in Portugal and India — and consistent quality over volume. The brand’s name reflects its philosophy: clothes for every man, made well, without pretension.

Aesthetic and Signature Pieces

Universal Works mixes British workwear references, military utility, and soft tailoring in accessible, well-cut garments. The Baker Jacket — a chore coat inspired by the kind of work jackets Keyte’s father wore — has been a signature piece since the first collection. Other icons include the Aston Pant (a flat-front chino in classic proportions), various overshirt styles, and relaxed knitwear. The brand’s colour palette runs from the deep and earthy to occasional bursts of unexpected brightness.
