White Mountaineering

White Mountaineering is a Japanese technical fashion brand founded in 2006 by Yosuke Aizawa — born in 1977, a graduate of Tama Art University’s Department of Product and Textile Design, and a former apprentice of Junya Watanabe at Comme des Garçons. The brand’s founding concept, which has guided every collection since: “The field in which we wear clothes is all outdoors.” The name itself encapsulates Aizawa’s vision — applying the sensibility and performance intelligence of mountain clothing (“mountaineering”) to the urban environment (“white” — the concrete landscape of Tokyo). The three guiding principles: design, utility, technology.

History and Design Philosophy

Aizawa founded White Mountaineering aged 29 (though some sources suggest 22; born 1977, founded 2006). His apprenticeship under Junya Watanabe gave him a foundation in avant-garde tailoring and fabric innovation; his lifelong passion for the outdoors — snowboarding, hiking, mountaineering — gave him the functional reference point that distinguishes White Mountaineering from purely fashion-driven technical brands. Aizawa’s approach to the garments’ performance performance parallels his mentor’s: understanding what a material can do before deciding what to make from it. Since 2016, the brand has shown at Paris Fashion Week, solidifying its international position.

Collaborations have been central to White Mountaineering’s identity: Barbour (British wax cotton + Japanese technical construction), adidas Originals (the adidas Originals by White Mountaineering line), Saucony, Levi’s, Teva, Seiko, Moncler W, Burton Thirteen, UNIQLO (bringing outdoor functional design to mass audiences), and Reebok. In 2019, Aizawa was also appointed Creative Director of Japanese football club Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo.
